Cardiac biomarkers are substances released into the blood when the heart is damaged or stressed. Measurements of these biomarkers are used to help diagnose acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and cardiac ischemia, conditions associated with insufficient blood flow to the heart.
Symptoms may include:
- Chest pain or pressure that lasts for more than a few minutes
- Pain or discomfort in your shoulders, neck, arms or jaw
- Chest pain that gets worse
- Chest pain that doesn’t get better by rest or medicine
Along with chest pain, there may be:
- Sweating, cool, clammy skin or paleness
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness or fainting
- Unexplained weakness or fatigue
- Rapid or irregular pulse
Cardiac biomarkers are released in the circulation due to damage or death of cardiac myocytes and measuring these biomarkers in serum or plasma is useful in the diagnosis of myocardial infarction. There are four established biomarkers for myocardial necrosis:
- Creatine kinase isoenzymes
- Cardiac troponin I
- Cardiac troponin T
Myoglobin is one of the first markers associated with myocardial necrosis to rise above normal levels. The measurement of Myoglobin can be used as a rapid and sensitive test in the early phase of an AMI. Creatine kinase is an enzyme that is often called cardiac enzyme. However, troponin I and troponin T are proteins. Out of all these biomarkers, troponin I is the most specific for myocardial necrosis. Measurement of cardiac Troponin I is used as an aid in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Troponin I is released rapidly in blood circulation after the onset of AMI.
